Currently our site is international, representing johnelwaypic over 100 artists from around the world. We have poets, musicians, painters, sculptors, digital artists, performance artists, animators and much more. We are always open to adding artists in new areas. Art on the Net came into existance in June of 1994. The idea of having such a site came to Lile while she was involved in an open studios event in April. She was displaying many of her new oil paintings in her studio when a friend and young johnelwaypic entrepeneur came through and wanted to purchase an oil painting entitled "Art on the Net". They talked about how wonderful it would be to have art up on the Internet for viewing and he offered Lile internet access for a WWW site that would help artists share their art. So like many things in the art world, the site began with a barter with Lile trading the oil painting, "Art on the Net" for an Internet connection for one year. Who am I? I am an Estonian too, my name is Jüri Ülesoo. On the photo you see me with my dog Josper. I''m not really the artist but I like art. Some years ago I made some oil paintings but not now. I''ll try to be the curator for some Estonian artists on the Internet and here johnelwaypic you see my first step - Navitrolla''s Gallery (thanks to Lile Elam and Art on the Net). The problem is that few Estonian artists have computers, good communication connection and time to learn and use it. I want to show their works to the whole world and the Internet is the best tool for it. Until the artist has his johnelwaypic (her) own Internet connection and e:mail address I will be mediator for him. So, you can e:mail your opinions to johnelwaypic me and I will give them to the artists. During the "day" I work as a Marketing Manager in the Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian area for Finnish concern VALMET (for Valmet Automation - producer of process automation systems). I am a member of Lions Clubs International. Our studio grew out of Maurel Press originated in 1955 by artists Sheila and Ary Marbain. It opened as a custom screen printing shop specializing in printing with contemporary artists. Sheila had studied art at Black Mountain College in North Carolina with Joseph Albers, Ilya Bolotowsky and William deKooning from 1948 through 1950. Ary had worked and exhibited as a painter in France for many years. After the sudden death of Ary Marbain in 1963, the studio was closed for a year. Sheila then decided to modernize the workshop and introduce screen photography along with a new vacuume printing table. Our studio reopened on 23rd Street in Manhattan. With an assistant, Sheila plunged into printing three dimensional objects. A plexiglass airship for Lichtenstein, an Oldenburg soft drum set, a set of dominoes with Fahlstrom, and a large fabric banner with Marisol were some of the editions.
